Allowing access to a mobile device

Step 1 - Noting the settings InboxGuardian is running on

The first step is to make sure the Mobile Management servers are running. These allow you to access your mail remotely and view your mail via the browser.

The settings can be found in the Mobile Acccess tab under Mobile Settings, as shown in the image below:

The settings in this example are as follows:

External IP address: 82.7.2.23
Port numbers: 110 and 81 (note the ":81" after the bottom IP address in the image above, this is a port number)
Username: d
Password: the password never changes

NOTE: The IP address shown above is your external IP address. This is supplied by your Internet Service Provider (Comcast, BT, Virgin Media etc). It is important that this IP address stays the same (known as a static IP address), if you are not sure please contact your ISP and ask them. If you do not have a static IP address then it could change at any time (when your router restarts or your ISP re-syncs etc).

It is also important to have a static internal IP address for the computer running InboxGuardian. For help setting this up click here.

Step 2 - Configuring the firewall

The ports InboxGuardian uses need to be given access to the Internet in order for the mobile access to work. The port numbers are also shown in the mobile settings, as explained above. In most cases the port numbers will be 81 for the browser access and 110 for the mail access. Port protocol is TCP and an outgoing rule needs to be set up.

All firewall are different but all will allow specific ports to be allowed or disallowed. In the video below the firewall is the Windows Firewall in Windows 7. The starting view is reached by double clicking the Windows Firewall option in the Windows Control Panel.

Once the ports have been opened it's time to set the router up.

Step 3 - Configuring the router

To configure the router correctly it needs to have a port forwarding feature. Most modern routers have this feature.

One extra setting is needed for this step and that is the internal IP address that InboxGuardian is running on. This can be found in Mobile Settings, as shown in step one. In most cases it will begin with 192.

The video below shows how to add a port forwarding rule to a router, the set up will vary from router to router but the settings required will be very similar. The router in the example video below is a Netgear Router.
