Router checklist

It is recommneded that both the router and the machine running InboxGuardian have static IP addresses, not dynamic ip addresses.

The router also needs to support port forwarding.

NOTE: It is also necesary to have a static external IP address and a static internal IP address for the computer running InboxGuardian. If you have DHCP enabled or a dynamic IP address then InboxGuardian won't work as expected due to the addresses changing everytime you connect to the internet.

How do I get a static external IP address for my router?

In order to get a static IP address for your router you need to contact your Internet Service Provider. Explain that you require port forwarding and need a static IP address for your router.

How do I know if I have a static or dynamic IP address?

Internal - The best way is to follow one of the tutorial links above to make sure the InboxGuardian machine is static

External - Go to http://www.ipaddresslocation.org and note your current IP address in the top right hand corner. Now unplug your router, wait a few minutes, then plug back in. Once it has booted visit the web site again then not the IP address. If it is the same then you have a static IP address, if not then you have a dynamic IP address.
